Oklahoma and Texas Tech won with backup QBs guiding the offenses. Oklahoma’s Patrick Fletcher, praised by De’Mond Parker, completed five passes and ran for 37 yards in a 37-9 win over North Texas after starter Brandon Daniels was sidelined. Texas Tech’s Matt Tittle entered after Rob Peters injured a shoulder, delivering 172 passing yards in a 35-3 win over Texas El Paso. Dykes expects Peters back soon as he navigates QB depth through early season.
Coach Schottenheimer said Elvis Grbac’s status and an injury situation leave the Chiefs with only one healthy backup, Todd Collins, ready to play if needed. Gannon, who relieved Grbac last season, had a rough game versus Jacksonville but later led a five game win streak and earned strong team confidence.
Grbac, cited by The Kansas City Star, says the injury is different and shows no fracture. He hopes to miss two or three games, noting a potentially quicker healing than last year and a faster return if no bone is broken.
