The Oklahoma High School team defeated Prairie View in the season opener with a strong start from the home squad. Prairie View struggled to match pace as OHS built an early lead and held on for the win.
Kansas legislators hailed a two day special session that adjourned with unanimous votes on updating the Hard 50 sentencing law and swift gubernatorial appointments. Representative Kevin Jones of Wellsville credited consensus and noted the session avoided lengthy debates and minimized taxpayer costs.
Franklin County legislators Reps Blaine Finch and Kevin Jones along with Sen Caryn Tyson supported the measure adopted Wednesday and signed into law Friday by Gov Sam Brownback. The bill creates a jury guided procedure for Hard 50 findings to meet constitutional standards. Finch called the bipartisan vote a result of careful interim committee work.
Investigators probed a shooting on I-35 just south of Edgerton Road that left one person with a lower leg injury and prompted authorities to shut down both lanes for several hours. A motorist was southbound around 7 30 p m when a random gunshot struck the victim. The injured party was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. The Miami County Sheriff s Office and Franklin County EMS provided details.
