Sorghum And Soybean Varieties At K State Field Day
Kansas State University agronomists discussed old and new experiments at the East Central Kansas Experiment Field Fall field day on Aug 31. Oliver Russ described herbicide and insecticide interactions harming sorghum stands on silt loam soils in the Manhattan area, with up to 75 percent loss. He noted this was the first time such interaction wrecked stands on that soil type, and the Ottawa site entered its second year of the study.

Addition of Urea Reduces Protein Costs
Dairymen and beef producers can cut winter protein costs by adding urea to ensilage. Ten pounds per ton raises protein about 3.5 percent dry matter. Urea mixes during silo blowing and loading. palatability remains intact. Replacing soybean meal, it cuts feed costs, though not advised in trenches or bunkers. Also notes alfalfa seeding timing and moisture needs for winter survival.
