EU sets deadline for changes in racism conference declaration
Delegates at the world conference against racism faced an EU deadline to remove anti Israel language from the draft declaration. France warned it would pull out if changes were not made, as the United States and Israel left after failed compromise talks. EU and Belgian officials led a night of negotiations with South Africa, Belgium, Norway, Namibia, and the Palestinians to craft a compromise, with France signaling possible exit if Zionism linked to racism remained. The dispute over the Mideast section and calls for reparations and apologies also dominated discussions as Mary Robinson urged continued talks.
