Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the United States aims to accelerate integrating former Iraqi soldiers into the new security structures in Iraq. He met with commanders and L. Paul Bremer in Baghdad, toured a hospital, and noted 50,000 to 60,000 Iraqis already perform security work. He highlighted careful screening to exclude anti American leanings while stressing broader Iraqi participation, amid international debate over UN involvement.
