Woman claims sex transmission of West Nile virus
A Colorado woman says she contracted West Nile virus through sexual contact with her infected husband. Health officials say there is no evidence of sexual transmission but cannot rule it out due to simultaneous family infections. The couple, Jennifer Lei and her husband Edward, along with their son Jacob, traveled on a Labor Day hunting trip. Jennifer tested positive after Edward and Jacob, who fell ill within a week, were confirmed. The CDC notes no proof of sexual transmission but acknowledges transmission via blood, organ donation, or breast milk remains possible. West Nile appeared in 1999 and by this year has infected 3,399 people in 39 states with 193 deaths.
