In Cincinnati a woman who fed expired meters was jailed after being charged with obstructing official business and disorderly conduct. She spent about three hours in jail before her daughter posted a 1900 dollar bond. She pleaded innocent.
The United Auto Workers set a Sunday strike deadline as contract talks with General Motors worsened. Union president Stephen Yokich warned a new agreement seemed unlikely by 11 59 p m Sunday, ending the extension of the Sept 14 contract if no deal is reached.
In St Petersburg Florida racial unrest returned with fires, looting, and rock throwing after a white officer shot a black motorist Tyrone Lewis 18. The violence left at least 11 injured 28 buildings burned and 20 arrested. A Justice Department conflict resolution team opened a preliminary inquiry and Mayor Fischer urged Civil Rights Commission review. The city restored calm with extended police shifts and National Guard standby.
