Harold Hughes, once a truck driver who battled alcoholism to serve three terms as Iowa governor and then as U S senator, died in Glendale Arizona at age 74. He wrote the law creating the National Institutes of Health and later led the Harold Hughes Center for alcoholism treatment in West Des Moines.

Glen E. Miller, 62, of Ottawa, died Wednesday October 24, 1996 at his home. Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa. Friends may call 5 p.m. Friday until service time at Dengel and Son Mortuary, with visitation Sunday 3 to 4 p.m. The family requests memorials to Olathe Hospice, in care of the funeral home. Procter & Gamble led declines with a 3 5/8 drop after reporting first quarter earnings of $1.39 per share, while Nasdaq rose to 1230.39 and NYSE composite slipped to 374.44.
