Must Absorb Gas Rate Increase
Topeka gas supplier Gas Service Co must absorb at least 397 758 dollars a year in gas purchasing costs for resale to industry. The Kansas Corporation Commission withheld action on letting the company pass the rise to users. The panel did approve a similar pass through for Kansas Power & Light Co. proposing 16 960 dollars more annually. It will impact two Atchison firms and one in Emporia. KCC chair Harry Snyder Jr. said absorption of the increase by Gas Service Co. remains undecided.

Stakes Run At American Royal Horse Show In Kansas City
Two $1,000 stakes highlight tonight’s American Royal Horse show with Working Hunters and Heavy Harness events. Last night Shannondale, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Long of Norfolk Nebraska, won the $1,000 five gaited mare stake before a crowd over 7,500. The afternoon session drew about 9,600 as Kansas Day was celebrated.

Nut Harvest Shines In Labette County Markets
Chetopa Kansas, known as the catfish capital, is a major pecan buying center in Labette County. The 1955 harvest is projected to be large in dollars, with local buyers expecting about 3.25 million dollars for pecans, the highest local price on record. Pecan prices run around 32 cents a pound as natives and budded trees yield a strong crop, boosted by a freeze reducing rivals’ outputs. Roscoe Sellers, an 80 acre grower, notes about half his trees are budded and the Neosho River Valley claims the best flavored pecans in the country. Local buyers anticipate over a million pounds shelling for consumer markets after frost.

William August Kraus 68 of Ottawa died at Ransom Memorial Hospital after a period of ill health. Born November 25 1886 in Homewood he lived in Franklin County his whole life. Survived by four sons Lloyd Tulsa Clyde in McPherson Sgt Don L in Germany Joe Lane. three daughters Opal Hale Melvin Myers Ottawa Malinda Kraus Gane. 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. six sisters and three brothers. Funeral at Lane Methodist Church Saturday at 2 p m with Rev. George M Boicourt officiating. Burial in Lane Cemetery. Casket open at Lamb Funeral Home until noon Saturday.
