Phone talks stall with union seeking 10-cent raise
Southwestern Bell Telephone Co and the CIO Communications Workers Union met for a fourth time this week. Both sides offered cautious optimism after a lengthy session but little progress. The union seeks a 10-cent hourly raise while the firm sticks to a 5.4-cent increase. Pay at the company ranges from 42 to 100 dollars weekly for about 51,000 union employees. The union authorized a strike by 71 percent, though the company says a strike without 30 days notice would be illegal under the old contract.
Mundt Says Ike Will Run Again for President
In Dallas South Dakota Senator Karl Mundt says he is for Dwight Eisenhower and believes he will run again. Mundt argues Republicans would win if Ike runs but warns the party needs a strong platform and a strong vice president to win broad support and avoid voters fearing a possible death in office.

Top Judging Teams Win in American Royal Contests

Word arrived of the death of former Ottawan Hilbert Pierson, 70, of Denver. Born December 29, 1885 in Ottawa, he lived in Denver 30 years and retired from May Co. Survived by three sons and two brothers, Joe and Luther, both in Denver. Funeral planned in Denver with details pending. Joe Pierson will travel to Denver tomorrow for the funeral.

Adlai Knows But He Won’t Tell
Former Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson said he has made up his mind on a possible run for the Democratic presidential nomination but will not reveal it now. Power Commission Suspends Increase
The Power Commission paused most of Cities Service Gas Co.’s proposed $3,936,000 wholesale rate hike for five months, with $2,906,000 suspended. A hearing is set to review the raise affecting about 50 wholesale customers in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. If no decision is reached in five months the firm may seek to activate the increase with refunds. The commission did not suspend $1,030,000 linked to industrial resale sales.

Woman cries during failed holdup in Glendora
A 20 year old mother Hallie Mae Long of Azusa attempted to rob a liquor store on a paper sack holdup. She cried after taking a pistol from the bag and fled with about $38 of her brother’s money still missing. She was booked on suspicion of armed robbery.
