Elvin Leon Hicks 63 of Topeka died Oct 2 1998 at VA Hospital Topeka services Thursday 11 am at Penwell Gabel Mid-town Chapel burial Mount Hope Cemetery He was born Jan 16 1935 in Selma grew up in Franklin County drove taxi and belonged to American Legion Post 1 He married three times and had two daughters four sons stepchildren and several grandchildren Surviving family listed Emerson Earl Nelson 75 of Kansas City Mo died Oct 4 1998 at Research Medical Center graveside services Friday 3 pm Mount Moriah Cemetery He was born Aug 12 1923 in La Follette Tenn a World War II veteran He married Georgia Riggs in 1947 and moved to Kansas City area in 1962 working as maintenance supervisor at the Muehlebach Hotel and in several nursing homes He was a member of Ararat Shrine Marlboro Masonic Lodge and New Life Pentecostal Church of God Survivors include three daughters five grandchildren and five great grandchildren two sisters also named.

Drug offender on probation gets jail time

A 20 year old Ottawa man Joseph Alan Nickel at 113 S Elm was ordered to serve seven months in prison after denying a drug problem He had two years probation from October 1997 for felony theft but absconded failed court ordered payments and tested positive for marijuana and cocaine He received credit for 37 days served and could be parole eligible in under five months Others in court included Ricky Dale Bell Kirk William Bishop Leslie Mills Michael Joseph Jackson and Marvin McReeves with various sentences probation continuances warrants and upcoming trials.

Pomona Teen Arrested in School Drug Sweep

A 17 year old Pomona High School student Justin Elliott was arrested during a routine school search using drug dogs. Police recovered a small amount of marijuana and bottle rockets in the student’s car in the Pomona Williamsburg school complex.

President Clinton said he has no choice but to veto the Republican farm aid plan, arguing it does not provide enough relief to farmers. He criticized the bill for not doing enough despite some help to farmers.

Drug arrest linked to Ottawa area raid at two locations

Ottawa police said a Monday morning drug arrest at Franklin County Education Opportunity Center followed a raid later that afternoon at 743 S Olive. Officers recovered marijuana and paraphernalia from Karen A Leroy 16 Wellsville after a tip she possessed drugs from a 14 year old Ottawa boy who was taken into custody for sale within 1000 feet of a school. No drugs were found at the Olive residence. Four children were placed in care due to deplorable living conditions. the residence is connected to Timothy Wright and owned by John Fearer through county records.
