City Manager Robert Mills announced uniforms for seven City Hall female staff with about six colors and several styles. The city grants a clothing allowance to all employees except department heads and admins, paying half of orders up to $80 first year and $60 second year.
The U.S. command ordered intensified B52 strikes in the Saigon region to counter Communist plans for attacks timed to influence the upcoming U.S. presidential election. In a separate report, three American helicopters supporting South Vietnamese troops were hit by enemy fire within an hour near Ben Cat, 25 miles north of Saigon. Two helicopters returned to base with light damage, one crash landed and was destroyed. three crew members were wounded.
The Ottawa Planning Commission unanimously urged the City Commission to restrict mobile home placement to areas zoned for residential use and suspend special-use permits until a decision is rendered. Four R-1 zones were identified, and re-zoning broader land near Eisenhower School was recommended along with admitting land north of 19th near Willow Acres. Meanwhile South Vietnamese field commanders moved toward Saigon as U S bombers targeted bases near Bien Hoa and Long Binh with intensified operations after earlier raids. Typhoon Lorna curtailed air activity over North Vietnam, and the Enterprise returned to the combat zone with 75 jets flying missions. The F111 fleet remained out of combat after a jet vanished with two crewmen aboard. Casualties reported include a mortar hit on Hoi An and a school blast near Quang Ngai.
Senator George McGovern will announce on October 10 a plan to end the Indochina war as part of an intensified antiwar campaign. He argues a president can bring all servicemen home from Vietnam, while Nixon faces possible peace developments abroad. McGovern criticizes Nixon's spending and deficits and asserts labor support to his ticket.
In Belfast two more men were killed as a 100 pound bomb blasted two Catholic taverns wounding 30. One body found in Lower Falls aged about 25 beaten and shot. another in Protestant east Belfast. Death toll 592 with sectarian killings rising. Bomb blamed on Protestant extremists. some sources doubt IRA link. Also reports largest Ulster bomb earlier targeted Londonderry police station. County forecast follows.
The Senate shelved welfare reform for now and ordered a test of all related proposals. An amendment by Sen. Roth would remove the Workfare plan and place rival plans including Nixon's Family Assistance Plan on trial. Delaying action could push reform for five to eight years while continuing current aid levels.
Six Kansas eye doctors will fly to Montemorelos Mexico this weekend to provide free eye checkups for more than 1500 school children. The volunteers from the Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity program will set up a portable clinic at a parochial school and test public school kids on Saturday. The team from Hillsboro Pittsburg Wichita Clay Center Newton will depart Newton Thursday morning in two private planes.
China’s deputy foreign minister told the 182-nation UN General Assembly that the Soviet U.S. arms talks do not disarm but start a new state in their race. He urged UN Charter review, a Mediterranean alliance free of major powers, and backed a three part transitional government for South Vietnam while accusing the U.S. of backing Israeli aggression. He warned war is inevitable while the world remains divided.
Project superintendent Ray Richardson said a new masonry crew will start work Thursday on the Franklin County jail after the original sub-contractor removed its equipment Tuesday. Masonry work is about 10 percent complete and enclosure is expected to finish in about five weeks.
