The Franklin County Historical Society presents Christmas Through the Cabin Window from 5 to 8 p m Sunday at the Dietrich Cabin in City Park with the Dietrich family reenactment built in 1859. Christmas Vespers play at Ottawa University Chapel at 4 p m Sunday and gifts from local artists are for sale through Dec 23 at the Ottawa Arts Center Gallery of Gifts. The Love Lights a Tree ceremony 7 p m Monday at Ransom Memorial Hospital invites $5 donations for ornaments honoring others to support cancer services and education. Fifth teen sentenced in girl's shooting case

Archdiocese names superintendent for Kansas City schools

After a two year search the Archdiocese of Kansas City Kan named Blake Mulvany 59 as superintendent of schools. Mulvany president of St Thomas Aquinas High School will start January 1 with Vincent Weiss named associate superintendent. The district serves 47 schools and 15000 students in northeast Kansas.

Soldiers fire on Palestinians near Jenin area

Israeli troops opened fire on hundreds of stone throwers in the West Bank wounding 17. Two soldiers were hurt when gunmen in an olive grove fired on a jeep guarding a bus with Jewish settlers. The ambush near Shaked led to hours of clashes and a suspension of Palestinian security deployments until further notice.
