Gallery of Gifts opens at Ottawa Arts Center
The Ottawa Community Arts Council begins its annual Gallery of Gifts sale at 105 E. Std. Center, running through December 23. OCAC president Mary Année Whiteford says the boutique offers a range of handmade items from area artists including wool ornaments by Maureen Harvey and woodwork and China painting by Ray and Marilyn Talbott, with prices from 40 cents to 30 dollars and more works from Ottawa painter Bill Howe expected.

Garnett firefighters battled two house fires over the weekend. One home at 301 West First Avenue suffered extensive smoke damage with residents away. A second blaze at 324 West Sixth destroyed another home with no injuries reported.

Deadly tornado devastates Barefoot Bay and nearby retirement communities
In Barefoot Bay Florida a twister destroyed fifty mobile homes and damaged one hundred, killing one person and injuring others as dogs searched the wreckage for survivors. The storm left widespread destruction across Snug Harbor Lakes and added to fatalities in Florida linked to a Caribbean- sweeping hurricane system. A 71-year-old resident described the sudden collapse of ceilings and windows as the lights failed.
