Clinton workers get payroll bonus
Washington AP report notes Bill Clinton pledged to curb fat-cat donors. Hours later about 500 Clinton campaign workers were placed on the Democratic Party payroll for November 6 through 16 as a victory bonus. Spokeswoman Ginny Terzano cited intent to mirror severance pay for those who helped elect Clinton and Gore.

Two men sentenced for drug possession
Two men arrested near Ottawa on I-35 in May were sentenced to federal prison for drug possession. Edmundo G. Alvarado from Odessa Texas received 74 years for conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute 15 kilograms of marijuana and firearm possession. Toribio Olivas of Kansas City Kansas was sentenced to three years for possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Police found marijuana and a pistol in the car, with a gasoline tank compartment used to smuggle drugs.

Health care forum to explain AARP proposal for all Americans
An AARP proposal titled Health Care America for a national health care system will be presented at a 10 a.m. Saturday forum in the conference room of Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa. Bettie Sue Shumway will chair, and Ann Kimmell of Topeka will speak, with several service clubs and health groups sponsoring. FHA Meeting Draws Central Heights and Pomona Students
Thirteen Central Heights High School and sixteen Pomona High students attended the District Fall Conference of Future Homemakers of America in Lyndon. The event theme Get It in GEAR focused on growth environment awareness and relationships with speaker Bill Coreds presenting Gearing Up for Tomorrow's Future. Pomona honored National FHA/HERO officer Jennie Heilson with a pigskin rose as she tours the nation. Other programs covered alcohol and drug abuse and AIDS. CHHS attendees listed include Crystal Waddle and Debbie Mack. PHS attendees include Kristie Rowland and Merritta Combs. Gold awards went to Schleicher Messick Chambers Rowland and Melissa Hoyt.
