Pentagon and Boeing tanker deal trimmed in compromise

The Pentagon agrees to a revised plan leasing 20 Boeing 767s and purchasing 80, cutting the Air Force refueling tanker program from 21 billion by about 4 billion. Senators Warner and Levin say the plan reduces costs while delivering tankers quickly, ending two years of political wrangling over the deal. Deputy Defense Secretary Wolfowitz notes the plan calls for 20 planes leased immediately and 11 to 13 bought per year, with a 2.4 billion annual rise to the acquisition budget over three years.
