Jazz Tales Soviet Ace In Draft
The New Orleans Jazz draft Aleksander Belov, the player who scored the disputed 1972 Olympic winning goal for Russia, in the 10th round. Jazz officials joke about sending Henry Kissinger to seal the signing while confirming Belov’s eligibility as a Shipbuilding Academy graduate, amid potential U S work permit hurdles and league constitutional review.

In Tokyo the ailing coach Bob Giegengack was moved by wheelchair to the American airliner and allowed to fly home after a two week China tour. The Chinese feared pneumonia, but he chose to depart with the team. A rowdy banquet in Peking led to an informal apology from AAU officials as athletes toasted with mao tai and clapped during speeches. The second item notes Canisius College bar from postseason play and TV for two years due to improper practices by the NCAA.
