Open records bill expands foster care disclosure in Kansas
Gov Kathleen Sebelius signed a new open records law expanding access to foster care and adoption records in cases involving death or serious injury. The measure responds to the Brian Edgar case and gives adoptive families court rights to challenge record openings. The governor also vetoed a lobbyist freebies disclosure bill, arguing the public deserves to know which legislators receive free meals and drinks.

Remembering D-Day at Normandy Cemetery Six Decades On
May Lynn and I visited the Normandy D-Day sites a week before Memorial Day. The cemetery overlooks Easy Red where units of the 29th and 1st Infantry landed. More than 9,000 graves mark the battlefield, with 307 unknowns. France gifted the site to the United States in perpetuity.
