From tragedy to triumph Evan Smith pushes toward final season
Lawrence native Evan Smith survived a head on crash on Old US 59 near Ottawa, breaking a lumbar vertebra. He underwent surgery, spent six days in Ransom Memorial Health, then walked with a walker and brace. OU coach Jim Whittaker and teammates urged him to run 100 meters at the May 4 ECAC conference, where Smith finished in 30.70 seconds. He graduated May 5, plans include returning to running slowly while rebuilding strength over months, supported by family, teammates, and staff.
