Missouri Governor backs UtiliCorp KCPL merger plan
Gov. Mel Carnahan endorsed the proposed merger of UtiliCorp United and Kansas City Power & Light as Western Resources mounts a hostile bid. He said the deal would preserve and create jobs, solidify a Missouri based HQ, and boost the Kansas City region. Shareholders vote May 22 in Kansas City, where both firms are based. Western Resources, based in Topeka, had proposed a separate merger with KCPL after KCPL directors rejected its bid.
