Pollution control advice given at Kansas workshop
Dr. Floyd Smith of the Kansas Agricultural Experimental Station urged using existing laws to curb pollution. At the State Soil Conservation Committee Spring Workshop dinner, about 50 county officials discussed erosion, sediment runoff, animal waste, processing wastes, and the role of fertilizers and pesticides. Smith highlighted 86 pounds of daily sediment runoff and noted Kansas leads in feedlot pollution prevention, while stressing proper manure use and safer disposal of whey from dairies. He cautioned about salinity in feedlot lagoons and emphasized soil conservation as the ultimate solution.
