College pledges include local men from area Alpha Gamma Rho

Among 86 K State college men pledging Greek letter fraternities since January 20, two are from the area: John Milton of Ottawa and Harold Van Horn of Pomona, both in Alpha Gamma Rho. Postmaster and Mrs T J Cummings will attend the Kansas state postal convention in Wichita, sessions at Broadview hotel with federal officials on the program. Elm Grove HDU made cancer dressings at an all day meeting in the loop building. Modernettes HDU has a similar meeting scheduled next week. Many other organizations have worked on the project for the past year.

Wolfson claims three seats on Ward board after vote tally

Chicago reports Louis E. Wolfson appears to win three of Montgomery Ward's nine directors based on April 22 vote tallies. Wolfson held proxies for 1,793,398 shares while Ward's management slate had 4,033,481 shares. Inspectors finish tally to confirm whether Wolfson gains three seats along with named directors Alexander Pittmaster III and Bernice Fitz-Gibbon as possible Wolfson appointees.

Fire at Gypsum school during early morning robbery

In Gypsum Kansas two men broke into the Gypsum school and fired a shot at teacher Charles Irick while fleeing. Karl Cunningham, a teacher, woke Irick and tried to block the robbers with their car. The robbers escaped after dropping loot in a ditch. Irick was not hit.

Deaths in Lyndon Wellsville and nearby areas

Obituaries report the deaths of Charles S Savage 60 of Lyndon Robert Henry Harrison 97 of Wellsville and John Williams 82 Osage county. Savage a former Manhattan resident died at home after long illness and leaves widow daughter and brother. Harrison former Ottawa Wellsville resident and longtime judge had a large family and was active in Masons with services in Wellsville and Lyndon. Williams longtime Osage County resident died in Topeka with funeral at Lyndon Shaffer Mortuary and burial Mt Zion Vassar. Funeral notices list service times and burial plans for each.

Dean Receives Cadillac Gift From Students at ISU

At Ames Iowa State College 40 year veteran M D Helser dean of student affairs was honored with a new Cadillac in a surprise ceremony before 8000 in the football stadium. Students and friends donated the car to respond to critics who said coaches got gifts while professors were overlooked.
