Editorial Greater than evil in Ottawa area tragedy
A 2013 quadruple homicide near Ottawa and a recent Orl incident frame a piece that argues humanity shines through amid tragedy. It highlights a fatal crash on I-35 near Williamsburg where bystanders and responders risked lives to aid Michael McAuliffe, noting two drivers, a Homeland Security officer, and a trucker’s extinguisher efforts. The column recalls rescuers like David Todd in 2011 and cites officers Captain Robert Cowdin and Deputy Sam Smith who died aiding others, concluding with a call to remember good people who help during floods fires and life threatening events.
