New fluorescent bulbs set to hit market in 1981
Philips and others unveil screw-in fluorescent bulbs that last longer and use less energy, with a 40 to 100 watt equivalent model priced around $12. A 60 watt equivalent SL bulb could save about $25 to $46 in operating costs over incandescent bulbs, paying back the higher price in months of use.

Washington AP report cites The Road Information Program TRIP claiming Americans waste 12 billion gallons of gasoline yearly due to bad roads. It notes 765000 miles of road in poor condition raising costs and that resurfacing 603000 miles and reconstruction 162000 miles could cost 70 billion dollars but yield 16 years of fuel savings.
