Food Stamp Overhaul Proposed by USDA
The Agriculture Department proposes major changes to the 5.5 billion food stamp program with tighter eligibility for higher income levels and easier access for the poor and elderly. Public comment runs through June 16, and the plan aims to remove luxury car owners from eligibility while adding work requirements for some students and extending disqualification for fraud. The rollout could occur late this year, potentially adding about three million low income participants while removing over a million higher income enrollees.
