The Ottawa Jaycees sponsor an Easter egg hunt on March 26 at Forest Avenue division. Entry for children ages 2 to 8 includes separate groups for ages 3 to 5 and 7 to 8 with prizes in each division.
A 2 year old Ottawa girl is in fair condition at Children’s Mercy Hospital Kansas City after a bacterial meningitis case. Franklin County Health Director Mike Pruner said state and county officials were notified and described the risk as limited to direct contact such as shared utensils. The girl was not in day care.
Franklin County women interested in construction careers invited to a free seminar at 1020 Central Kansas City Missouri from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Local arts listings show Wichita Brass Quintet at 7 in Garnett at Anderson County Junior Senior High School as part of Garnett Performing Arts Series. Ottawa hosts multiple student art displays and ongoing shows at several venues. Kansas City area features the Civic Orchestra at Johnson County Community College, the Gem and Mineral Show at Market Center, plus multiple other concerts and theatre offerings across venues like Bartle Hall and the Lyric Theatre.
Franklin County planners voted to create a seven member board of zoning appeals for the county, with five former township appeal members likely to serve. They also proposed changes to zoning purposes removing morals, flood risk framing, and tax base protection references, to keep planning commission recommendations as such. A county plan to rezone 80 acres near Wellsville from agricultural to residential was noted, and an executive session with County Attorney Wright discussed confidential attorney-client matters.
Two members announced resignations from the Oe Library Board of Trustees. Wayne Duderstadt said he cannot commit to a second four year term, while Judy Ransom plans to resign in April with two years left. Bob Reusch will serve a second term.
The welfare measure moves forward while capital punishment bills stall. Provisions aim to cut welfare costs by mandating parental residence for pregnant minors, reducing family benefits by ten percent, and terminating benefits for job quitters or those fired for gross misconduct. Workfare participants would receive benefits for 30 months, followed by a three year ineligibility period.
Tonight will be cloudy with light winds from the south. Sunday brings a chance of morning showers east with dry west areas and highs from the upper 60s to near 50. The court granted probation for the Nebraska woman with 180 days to repay a lawyers fund and 120 days to cover a probation supervision fee and court costs. The judge said visitation rights must be decided by a Nebraska court. The defense requested a minimum jail term and probation. the defendant has ongoing outpatient care and medicatio n. The recommended inpatient treatment at Lamed State Hospital could not be followed due to guidelines. The court noted the risk to the defendant and her daughter, who remains with the father.
Oglesby says under Kansas law church schools are not accredited but credits would transfer to other schools. Funding is still a hurdle though, with renovation mostly volunteer driven. An organizational meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. March 26 at CRCC to gauge interest, staff needs, and potential student enrollment.
