Senate committee Rejects Carlin oil tax proposal
TOPERA Ran AP The Senate taxation committee on Friday rejected Gov John Carlins plan for a 24 percent severance tax on oil and gas. The 45 vote defeat kept the bill in the Assessment and Taxation Committee. Burke chair refused to break the tie, drawing criticism from supporters. The House approved 345 percent compromise moves to Ways and Means, hearings set for March 15. The Senate plan was double referred, making floor action unlikely. Committee added use of mineral tax for school financing and 15 percent to counties. Burke said public input was lacking on the Senate amendments. Sens voting for the bill included Chaney Eldredge Johnston Mulich Montgomery. Against were Angell Kerr Allen Thiessen Hayden.
