Woman spends decades to fund town pool dream

Maisie DeVore, 82, raised $100,000 through recycling and fundraising over 30 years to build a 40 by 75 foot swimming pool in Eskridge. A $73,000 state grant plus donations, including $2,000 from Glenn Close after DeVore worked as an extra in films based on Sarah Plain and Tall, push the project toward a planned July opening across from her home. The town of about 600 faced lack of a pool, with Alma and Lake Wabaunsee as nearest options, spurring community support and pride in her steadfast effort.
