Melvern Man Dies In One Vehicle Crash West Of Here
A 28-year-old Melvern man, Larry Dean Walker, died Saturday night when his 1988 GMC pickup went out of control on K-31, left the road, overturned several times, and ejected him. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Wellsville Board of Education began interviews for a new superintendent with sessions set for March 10 and 14, following Don Williams’ retirement announcement. The Marais des Cygnes Valley school district was recommended for accreditation, with inspectors urging math and writing improvements and less data, to be reevaluated in 2003-04. The Franklin County Commission will canvass primary election results at 9 a.m. Friday.

Lyons Trial Details Mailing List Fraud Case
Rev. Henry Lyons, head of the National Baptist Convention, faced trial in St. Petersburg, Florida, over defrauding firms that paid for an 8.5 million member list. Prosecutors say the figure was inflated, and a former aide testified Lyons instructed her to craft a list by sounding black, even removing certain names, with an imperial wizard of the Ku Klux Klan appearing on the list.

Suspect killed after Dodge City shootout and car chase
An 18 year old man who shot an acquaintance then forced a driver to flee the scene was shot by police and died later in a Wichita hospital. He had held hostages, fired at a vehicle, and sought a place to rob before his death. Ronald Timion, 19, was wounded and in critical condition on life support. Ricardo Chacon died after a self inflicted gunshot while cornered.
