Byrd to Call Naval Officials on Atomic Sub Policy
Sen. Byrd announced he will ask top naval officials to testify before the Senate Armed Services Committee on why the Navy continues building conventional submarines rather than fully pursuing atomic-powered submarines. He criticized the defense bill for funding five atomic subs versus four conventional, noting Nautilus already afloat and Seawolf scheduled to launch. Committee member Sen. Jackson warned Russia may soon deploy atomic submarines.
