Close Call For Driver

A Franklin county man narrowly escaped death in a trio of area weekend accidents. Carl E. Thompson, 33, Otawa, was driving a southbound 1955 Chevrolet milk truck that nearly plunged into a rock quarry north of Garnett early Sunday morning. The truck left US 59 and rested hanging over the quarry with Thompson stepping out uninjured but shaken. He told Anderson county sheriff Sam Geer that he had dozed off. The truck was badly damaged. In a second Anderson county crash Saturday night, Jewell Kansas youth Robert McCracken, 20, driving a 1949 Ford southbound, failed to negotiate an S-curve, left the road, traveled 172 feet, struck and snapped off a telephone pole, and came to rest. McCracken, who was ejected, suffered severe facial injuries and was taken to Garnett hospital by Harold Evans. The collision occurred about 10:45 p.m. Saturday on US 59 four miles north of Garnett. Highway Patrolman Bob Conaty and Sheriff Geer investigated. A separate incident earlier, about 6:45 p.m. Saturday on Ross Hill north of Ottawa, involved a northbound 1955 Buick driven by A. F. Davidson, 36, Kansas City, which sideswiped a southbound 1955 Chevrolet driven by Jack L. Jacobs, 31, Kansas City. No injuries were reported. Conaty listed damage to each vehicle at 25 dollars.
