A 12 member commission urged sweeping loyalty security reforms and tighter subversion safeguards. Alva Hoover and family, including son Michael, relocated from Maxwell Field Montgomery to Inglewood California after five years there. Hoover’s son Bobs from Houston visited. A storm at Conard Air Port near Ottawa caused property damage including a chimney at the tenant house, broken windows, a moved small plane and damaged TV antenna.
Ottawa University will receive 83,500 from the Ford Foundation as the final payment of a 1955 grant totaling 163,500 for Ottawa in Kansas. The nationwide program distributed 260 million to 630 private colleges, with Ottawa the sole Kansas recipient of an accomplishment grant to raise salaries, joining earlier 119,600 and later revised 163,500 totals. Other Kansas colleges listed include Baker 139,000 Bethany 115,900 Bethel 91,000 Emporia 100,500 Friends 110,000 McPherson 91,500 Marymount 144,000 Mount St. Scholastica 133,500 St Benedicts 149,000 Saint Mary 142,500 Southwestern 130,500.

Dean N R H Moor at the Episcopal Cathedral in Pittsburgh urged parishioners to seek comfort during warm services. He advised that if standing or kneeling feels strenuous on hot Sundays worshippers may sit, promoting ease while prayer.
D E Wilson 68 of Quenemo forfeits a $5 bond after failing to stop at 2nd and Locust. In Police Court this morning Norris Duane Johnson 22 of Pomona and Vernon Clayborn Heine each pleaded guilty to reckless driving for drag racing on South Main and were fined $25 by Judge Milo Harris. A R Peterson of Ottawa Woolworth is transferred to Sweetwater Texas to manage the store. L E Latham will replace him here. Mr and Mrs Peterson and three daughters plan to move to Sweetwater. Mrs E Crain of Terrebonne Oregon travels with her husband to Mayo Clinic Rochester Minnesota for surgery. Various Ottawa residents and former Ottawans visited or moved, including Hensleys to Salina and the McKenzies visiting Marysville.
Readable hospital arrivals list includes Mrs Bessie Chatterton of Walnut plus several area residents and visitors admitted on Saturday and Sunday. Dismissals note Mrs Marvin Neill and baby son. other names include Mrs Hattie Andrew and Connie McCullough.
Weekend crashes caused heavy damage to three vehicles with minor injuries to two people. At 5 30 Saturday morning Michael Heffron 34 Emporia drove a gasoline truck towing a tandem trailer and lost control overturning into a ditch tearing up trees.
Charles T. Barnhart of 1103 N Cherry died at home Saturday night aged 77. Born April 8, 1880 in Maries County Missouri, he worked 26 years as a streetcar motorman in St Louis retiring in 1944 and moved to Ottawa in 1946. Survived by his widow, two daughters, a son, a step daughter, nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral services set for tomorrow at Towner's Chapel St Louis service Thursday at Drehmann Harral Funeral Home. Burial in Valhalla Cemetery.
At 11 15 am Sunday Rose Mary Latimer 18 was preparing to turn off USS59 onto Centropolis road six miles north of Ottawa when her car was rear ended by Daniel D Myers 30 of Phoenix Ariz. Myers said he traveled about 45 mph and could not stop in time. Skid marks measured at over 160 feet. Latimer’s car was destroyed and struck a grove of trees. Mrs Myers had leg lacerations treated and released. Myer car suffered major damage.

Miss Manta Jane Elder died June 19. Funeral services were conducted June 22 at Lamb Funeral Home by Rev. Roeger Fredrikson and Dr. W. A. Elliott. Pallbearers were her nephews Jesse T. Elder Jack R. Elder John C. Elder Donald W. Elder Kenneth E. Elder and Thomas L. Elder. Mrs. Frank Thayer sang with Mrs. J. R. Henning on piano. Members of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. operating force attended. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery.
