U S Steel offered a 10 cent an hour wage hike which the CIO United Steel Workers rejected. President David J. McDonald said no settlement appears justified. The two-year contract allows a strike at midnight next Thursday if no agreement is reached amid ongoing behind the scenes talks.
Washington The Atomic Energy Commission said there has been no evidence of a major Soviet atomic test in almost a year. The statement appears to contradict Dr Ralph E Lapp a nuclear scientist who claimed Soviet tests were conducted this spring.

R N Gilkinson, harvest labor officer, notes ripening is even from north to south, reducing the usual 10 day lead and altering migratory patterns of workers and operators and causing missed commitments in many areas.
New York stocks fell softly into late afternoon trading as most sectors drifted. Standard Oil of New Jersey beat the broad trend with notable gains around three points, while steels, motors, coppers, chemicals, airlines, and radio televisions eased with smaller losses.
