More than 150 school janitors from East Central Kansas gathered in Ottawa for a state sponsored custodial school led by the State Vocational Education Department and Emporia State. Sessions covered housekeeping, mechanical problems for schools, and lawn shrub care.
Doctors at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital announced the first successful kidney transplant between non identical twins. Andrew Riteris donated a kidney to brother John on January 24 1959. After 17 months the kidney functions well and both brothers are healthy. John would have died without the transplant.
Partly cloudy this afternoon and tonight with a cooler trend. Friday will be partly cloudy with highs in the lower 80s and overnight lows in the 50s.
Leo Akers a 59 year old master sergeant longtime advisor to National Guard units in Ottawa Paola and Pleasanton will begin discharge processing at Fort Leavenworth on Friday with retirement set for June 30 He plans two and a half years in inactive reserve to reach 30 years His family includes wife Doris a photographer at Fort Sam Houston and daughter Kathryn married to a sergeant at Fort Benning A younger son Leo Akers Jr recently joined Headquarters and Headquarters Battery 12th Artillery in town and Akers will start a civilian career selling office supplies at Didde Office Supply in Ottawa He views retirement as a new life advising customers rather than guardsmen.
City commissioners rejected all bids for sewage disposal plant improvements as bids exceeded engineers estimate of 30,000 dollars. Only two bids were received Gus A. Bruwn of Kansas City Missouri at 48782 dollars and Wea Constructors of Paola at 34800 dollars. Engineers will re-advertise for new bids.
In Iola Kansas an early morning burglary at the Cooperative Power and Light Co. vault blew open the safe and stole 215 dollars in currency. Investigators found about 6000 dollars in checks left behind. Vault and office damage was estimated at 500 to 600 dollars. Manager Wes Clendenen said losses are covered by insurance.
AP reports Kansas traffic death log for 24 hours to 9 am. shows a 1960 205 period compared to 1959 with 246 deaths. The report notes tolls across the state during the 24 hour window.

Walton State Bank was robbed by two armed men in work clothing who fled with $3,000 to $5,000. The pursuit reached Wichita's edge as investigators theorize the suspects may be King Van Amburgh and William Lee Clark, two escapees from Vinita hospital. An abandoned car, a stolen getaway vehicle, and sightings by Darrell Sattler and Marilyn Hague marked the trail but led to no clear lead after planes assisted in a wide search across south-central Kansas.
Kansas City Kansas nine A Santa Fe Railroad employee was killed today when he fell beneath the wheels of a train in the Argentine district. The 23 year old Kenneth R. Swartz of North Kansas City Missouri was engaged in a switching operation when he apparently attempted to board a moving train.
Ottawa recorded the warmest night of the season with readings between 73 and 88 degrees. Kansas weather officials forecast cooler, unsettled conditions with partly cloudy skies. Central states saw summer storms, with Belleville, Norton, Scandia, Marysville, and Hutchinson reporting rainfall. Shumway Illinois suffered tornado damage. Kentucky storms caused deaths. hail up to 3 1/2 inches fell near Decatur Indiana. Terre Haute endured wind damage at the fairgrounds.
Sherwin U. Snyder of Chicago will join Ottawa University as assistant professor in the economics and business administration department. He is a senior accountant at Arthur Young & Co. in Chicago and holds a BSc from Kent State University 1955 with high honors and an MSc from Ohio State University 1958. He served as an Air Force officer in accounting for government contracts. He will teach accounting and other business subjects under Dr. Wayne Angell, department head.
Honolulu AP President Eisenhower says future U S presidencies will continue extensive travel for diplomacy and goodwill despite risks. He spoke during a Hawaii golfing sojourn and outlined plans to expand his post in Korea Formosa the Philippines and Okinawa. He argued tours showcase U S interest and may be needed to counter Khrushchev’s personal diplomacy.
Washington action reports Congress advancing a pension bill to broaden eligibility for lawmakers and some veterans. The measure lets members qualify after combined service in Congress and other government work, with pensions tied to years of service and topped at eighteen thousand dollars annually.
