Second half taxes due at treasurer s Tuesday
Absent who paid only half of their property taxes in January are reminded that the second half of the payment is due Tuesday at the Anderson County treasurer s office. The same deadline applies to other counties in Kansas. The Garnett Municipal Swimming pool staff will be host to swimming lessons for adults starting next Monday. Those interested can sign up for classes during the pool s regular business hours. The East Central Kansas Hay Day will be June 27 in Coffey County, beginning with registration at 9 a.m. The event will be at a farm one half of a mile south of Beta Junction on the east side of US 75. The event starts at 10 a.m. and will feature demonstrations of mowers and conditioners, tedders, bale handling equipment and other equipment. Seminars will include fertilizers for native grasses, bale storage and tarping. Garnett area businesses attending will include Lybarger Oil and Brummel Farm Service of Garnett. The event is being sponsored by the Osage and Coffey County Extension Councils, the Kansas State University Cooperation Extension Service, the Coffey and Osage County Soil and Water Conservation Districts and Niles Farm, Inc. of Lebo. The average price of wheat tumbled nine cents to close at 3.78 by the end of the day Friday. The price of corn and soybeans remained unchanged at 2.63 and 5.53, respectively. The price of grain sorghum went up a penny to 4.29.

Hope Care Center Opens for HIV Patients in Kansas City
In Kansas City Missouri a 16 bed Hope Care Center for HIV positive and AIDS patients opened with hundreds of volunteers and Gov. Mel Carnahan in attendance. It is the first skilled nursing facility for HIV positive people in Kansas or Missouri and arose when Dr. Sharon Lee could not place her patients in existing nursing homes. The one story yellow brick center is in south Kansas City amid century old trees.

KCK man killed in Miami County crash
A Kansas City Kansas man, David N. Phillips aged 23, died in a one car crash near Paola Miami County authorities said. The truck he rode in lost control about 2 am Sunday, Phillips was thrown from the vehicle and pinned beneath when it overturned.
