ORC Board Approves Bambino Rule Change and Time Limit Lift

ORC officials pressed for reform across tee ball to Bambino leagues citing player discontent. The Bambino division will adopt a 12 consecutive outs rule and abolish the 100 minute game limit to ensure more players participate. The board also plans advisory committees and bylaws simplification with final decisions retained by the board.

County plans center and compost site near new transfer station

New center work continues from page 1 with drop off for material reducing staff needs. Cain notes volunteers will remain involved while county workers fill in as needed. A composting site is planned near the new transfer station, which is slated to open in late September. Work on composting will begin after the transfer station is completed.

Alcohol factor tied to Pomona Lake drownings

Osage County sheriff says blood alcohol levels above .08 were found in one drowning victim and alcohol contributed to both deaths of Ralph Don Avery, 55, and David L. Whitt, 34 near Pomona Lake dam. The incident began when Avery’s non running boat drifted. Whitt attempted rescue and both men went under water.

Planners approve minor zoning changes in county

Franklin County Planning Commission approved minor zoning rule changes including wording shifts to reference other sewer systems and Kansas in enforcement. They set a 34 000 dollar budget for next year, voted 8-1 with Art Witham dissenting. Investigations were ordered into septic conditions, junk cars on Kentucky Road, and a possible salvage business on Labette Road near Ottawa.

Heat waves sweep East and Midwest with record temps

Heat and humidity gripped the East and Midwest for a second day with highs in the 90s and over 100 in Milwaukee. Cities such as Rochester, Pittsburgh, Washington DC, Toledo, Fort Wayne, and Green Bay reported records as residents cope with heat. An 8-year-old enjoys icy theater scenes in Hastings while residents in Madison, including Bey Haberman, cope with high temperatures in air conditioned spaces.

Sam Brownback to attend Jayhawker Days in Williamsburg

Republican congressional hopeful Sam Brownback will join the Jayhawker Days celebration in Williamsburg on Saturday. The event features more than 100 fair exhibits in categories such as vegetables forestry foods clothing rocketry photography and arts and crafts along with a grand parade an old-fashioned picnic and numerous Saturday events including a 10 kilometer run three on three basketball softball bicycle events horseshoe contest bed races antique tractor pull talent show and street dance.

Ex Franklin chief office in limbo RTC reports

The RTC says the former Franklin Federal Savings headquarters at Seventh and Main remains in limbo as buyers exercise options. First National, the lead purchaser among five banks, must decide within 30 days from June 11 on exercising its option for the building and related deposits and assets totaling about 288 million. If declined, RTC will market the property as real estate owned. Commercial Federal informs customers of the change and new ownership with RTC notices on rates.
