Midwest storm wrath hits four states and Chandler’s losses

Severe storms and tornadoes struck Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa from Tuesday into early today. In Chandler Minnesota a housing development and businesses were leveled or damaged, 25 hurt with 11 hospitalized, and hazardous farm chemicals spilled from destroyed storage tanks raising water safety concerns. The National Guard aided cleanup in Chandler Olivia and Clarkfield as residents faced destruction, injuries, and fears of contamination from pesticides and fertilizer.

Deputies Rescue Teen From Fire in Girard

Two Crawford County deputies arrived before the fire truck at a rural Girard home and rescued 16 year old Kristi Whiteman after she became overcome by smoke during a reported fire. The fire was put out and oxygen given to a deputy, as authorities noted the 911 system has only since February been available in the county.

RMH grant talks and board expansion eyed by county

Franklin County commissioners spent much of their weekly session on Ransom Memorial Hospital matters. Elaine Needham proposed a second grant transmittal letter for a Community Development Block Grant while approval was given to expand RMH trustees from five to seven, appointing a physician and a banker. The KDOC review and grant structure remain undecided. A closed session with County Attorney Wendell Barker discussed AMH endowment funds amid an audit. Board asked for bids on emergency radios and a used car for Public Works.

OU seeks Franklin funds for scholarships

Ottawa University officials launch a drive to raise funds for Franklin County student scholarships. Jim Smith notes the gifts enable a $1000 award, with 1991-92 totaling 94 recipients. Volunteers support the 1992 campaign committee including Heise, Duderstadt, Meyer, Bateman, Allegre, Jackson, Hinderliter, Shields, Grogan, Porter, Ramsey, Dew, Creason and Maxwell.

County extends tax deadline for 1991 bills

County tax deadline pushed to June 22 by mail postmark or June 20 close. Franklin County Treasurer Vera Figgins says payments for real estate and personal property are due by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, with penalties for those who paid only half last December. Vehicles with DMV are excluded.
