Former Teacher Tells Why He Swiped Boy
A year old former school teacher admitted to Kansas City police he picked up 5 year old Garry Carpenter at Fairyland Park on June 4 and drove toward Joplin Missouri. William Neill Butler signed a statement after a lie detector test and Garry identified him. He was arrested in Neosho on a charge of enticing a child. Butler says Garry cried lost and they looked for the family car before driving toward Oakland Street. He claimed to fear being late for enrollment at Southwest Missouri State College and described motel stops and a return toward Springfield, saying he gave the boy money and toys in Joplin before continuing. The boy was found on a street corner in Joplin after a 22 hour Kansas City police search.

Orphans To Visit Salina From Alaska
Two young Alaskan orphans Angela Norbett 12 and Cecilia Jorgenseon 10 are bound for Salina on a summer visit. Their travel costs are paid by Schilling Air Force Base personnel with support from Salina Airmen on temporary duty. The plan had them fly to Denver then take a train to Salina but a Denver rail rule requiring adult escort delayed travel.
