Grand Opening of Odd Fellows Orphans Home 1894
A photo recalls the grand opening of the Odd Fellow's Orphans Home in 1894 on U.S. 50 near Williamsburg. The building once housed the Silkville communal settlement founded by Ernest Valeton de Boissiere. Valeton sought a cooperative venture sharing farm products and silk. He donated the 3000 acre property to the Grand Lodge for an orphanage, which operated for years before the lodge withdrew support and the home closed.
