Topeka Police identified Charles Joseph Bohlender Jr. and pilot Jeff William Howey, both killed when a helicopter crashed during a false alarm at a west Topeka warehouse. Bohlender, 33, was an OHS graduate and Eagle Scout who had earned the Medal of Valor. Mayor Wagnon ordered flags at half staff.
The Ottawa Board of Education voted to cap kindergarten and first grade at 22 students starting fall, aiming for smaller primary classes. Interim Superintendent Kay Highbarger noted benefits for teachers and that most five schools lie within five minutes of each other despite possible minor late-enrollment impacts.
Ottawa officials announce a 40 foot settling basin cover sank after a hole formed, allowing odor release. City utility director Jim Bradley says repair will be costly and involve lifting the timber cover with a crane and possibly replacing the aging structure built in 1951. The incident affects nearby areas but poses no immediate threat.
Ottawa Mayor Richard Jackson, executive director of East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Agency, will join Kansas representatives at the National Town Hall Meeting on Poverty in Washington D C. He will relay results from over 50 Kansas town meetings and participate on a panel addressing housing, welfare reform, and living wages amid rising housing costs and limited subsidies.
