The Labor Department said 296,000 filed for unemployment benefits for the week ended June 10, down 16,000 from the prior week. Local quotes for several stocks and grain prices were also listed.
In Westminster California a new Vietnamese Veteran Cemetery at Westminster Memorial Park hosts plots for South Vietnamese soldiers and spouses outside Vietnam. About 200 of 300 plots sold at roughly 4800 dollars each. The site adjoins the Asian Garden of Peaceful Eternity and includes a statue replica and financial aid for funerals.
The 73 year old George Trofimoff, a retired Army Reserve colonel, was arrested in Tampa after an FBI sting for spying for the Soviet Union and Russia over 25 years. Indicted for selling defense information while a civilian employee at the Nuremberg Joint Interrogation Center, he faces a possible life sentence. His wife Jutta was not involved.
NEC researchers report in Nature that the cockroach possesses a wind-detecting organ, cerci, with microscopic hairs on its rear end. By tethering roaches and testing in a wind tunnel, scientists found nerve patterns show hairs sense minute wind changes guiding escape from predators or humans.
In Lower Moreland Township authorities rescued a man who became stuck in the lower chamber of a portable toilet while searching for his keys at Elkins Field. He was freed after crews destroyed the unit, treated for cuts and bruises, and required removal of a wedged toilet seat.
AccuWeather predicts tomorrow for Ottawa Kansas with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Regions from New York to the Gulf Coast and from the Great Lakes to Texas may see storms, with some severe. Northern Rockies expect a few showers and cloudy, thunderstorm conditions.
