Gov Docking named Robert Bechholdt a Distinguished Kansan after national publicity for his Kansas State School of Horseshoeing. Washington AP reports the dollar share of farm exports from Food for Peace programs fell to 13 percent last year, the program's lowest since 1954. Commodities under Food for Peace totaled about $1 billion of a record $7.7 billion in U.S. farm exports for the year, near 1970 levels but far from the 1964 peak of $1.62 billion. Downturn blamed on India and Pakistan self-sufficiency, higher cash sales, and shifts in credit arrangements.
The Food for Peace program, extended in 1970 for three years, ends the local currency payment method in new agreements. Surplus U.S. farm products especially wheat had relied on soft credit in the past. The program’s share of total U.S. farm exports dropped to 13 percent last year, the lowest since 1954.
