Richmond grain elevator reopens under Beachner Grain
Beachner Grain of St. Paul reopened the Richmond co op elevator after foreclosures at Richmond and Williamsburg. Ralph Ferguson, manager, said operations began before formal closing and the center will buy wheat oats and other grains, offer seeds this harvest, and add chemicals next spring. The same phone number 835-6125 will be used.

Landfill fires cost county tens of thousands in aid
Franklin County approved 317,093.38 for outside help in fighting the most serious landfill fire this year. Ottawa Fire Department services totaled 941.68, with 7,999.50 paid to Terracon Environmental. Six township rural fire departments will receive 8,152.20. The March blaze began March 20 with work starting March 26 over five days. a February trash compactor fire caused about 18,000 in loss. The May fire, also likely spontaneous combustion, caused no injuries. Continued on page 3.

TOPEKA AP The Kansas Supreme Court ruled the Legislature valid in its legislative redistricting, likely preventing a delay of the August 4 primary. The decision also creates new State Board of Education districts based on Senate lines, with House districts largely unchanged since 1989 and Senate lines shifting to favor Johnson and Sedgwick counties. Rural districts expand as portions of Reno County and western and north central Kansas lose representation.
