Brent Wright of Ottawa operates Brent Wright Quarter Horses and has built national fame in reining. His client horse Custom Red Berry topped the NRHA Derby in Oklahoma City earning 22 538 dollars, with a 228 score. The mare has earned over 135 000 dollars and Wright treks a few miles from his ranch to train and show.
Barbara Ott and her husband opened Wellsville Hardware at 511 Main Street in 1986. The store, once employing up to 15, offered plumbing heating and air services then expanded to appliances and toys after Jerry Ott died in 1997. Ott closed the shop at end of 2000, citing tough finances and competition from larger retailers. Local leaders called the loss a major setback for downtown Wellsville and urged shoppers to support local businesses.
An Ottawa man, Terry D. Saffer, 30, died in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer on K-68 near Ottawa at 6 10 p m Thursday. The semi driver, Paul F. Sisk, 54, of Anderson Missouri, was uninjured. CHART mapped the scene and investigators believe Saffer drove intentionally into the truck’s path. A coroner’s report is pending.
In Topeka Kansas the Senate refused to back four House veto overrides aimed at trimming state spending. The House attempted to override Gov. Bill Graves vetoes restoring and adding millions to the budget but the Senate blocked all changes. Graves lamented the move and urged fiscal restraint for 2002 and beyond. The session closed with Graves having issued 22 vetoes totaling over 56 million dollars, primarily cuts to the transportation department, while the 2002 budget plans were deferred to January.
