Gene Variant Linked To Depression After Stress

A study in Science reports that adults carrying a short form of the 5-HTT gene are more prone to clinical low mood after traumatic life events than those with the long form. Researchers from University of Wisconsin Madison, King’s College London, and University of Otago analyzed 847 adults in New Zealand, finding 33 percent with at least one short 5-HTT copy developed low mood after four events versus 17 percent with two long copies.
