Forty-Year Pen Pal Friendship Survives Time and Mail
Mary Schleicher of Pomona and Joellyn Fingerle of Fremont have exchanged letters for four decades since 1962 when Fingerle, then 14, reached out from Santa Rosa, California to a Kansas girl. They met three times, last during Fingerle’s birthday weekend in Fremont, while continuing a monthly letter cadence aided by email in recent years. Schleicher surprised Fingerle with a July visit after coordinating through Fingerle’s daughter, reconnecting after 17 years since their first in-person meeting in St Joseph Missouri. The friendship is marked by a handmade quilt and a shared history of college, marriage, and family, all framed by letters and envelopes from across the United States.
