Markets Turn Down Amid Ethics Scandals Steady Losses Hit Stocks
Wall Street failed to hold early gains as Gillette and Texas Instruments earnings offered little support. The Dow slipped 0.3 percent to 7759.52, the Nasdaq fell 0.5 percent to 1276.70, and the S&P 500 dropped 1.2 percent to 810.44 amid eroding investor confidence and possible Enron-related disclosures. Major financials faced pressure as hearings approached JoP Morgan Chase and Citigroup amid Enron scrutiny. Local quotes show various company prices and grain prices for Franklin County and nearby markets.
