Senate approves billions in spending cuts bill

After five months of debate and a presidential veto the Senate approved a bill cutting 16.3 billion in ongoing programs while approving 7.2 billion for new spending mostly for disaster relief The measure now goes to President Clinton who endorsed the rewritten bill The vote was 90 to 7 with final passage blocked by several proposed amendments and noted opposition from a handful of senators

Watchdog group aims at local-option school vote and more

The Ottawa watchdog group seeks to force elections on city library charter and school district local option budgets by gathering signatures equal to 10 percent of votes cast, within 60 days of publication. They claim 400 signatures on other petitions, though authorities question page duplicates. The group asked the Kansas Attorney General to review two ordinances and discussed city lawsuits and city responses to citizen concerns.

Gas pipeline rivals spark debates over consumer costs

The Kansas Corporation Commission will hear Aug 7 on contracts allowing Kansas Pipeline to supply Western with up to 1 million cubic feet of gas daily through 1997 and build a 25 mile Johnson County pipeline for 30 million over 20 years. The staff may recommend rejection citing potential rate increases despite claimed competition benefits. Dennis Langley and Carla Stovall figure in the case along with Kansas Pipeline and Williams.
