The Ottawa Board of Education meets tonight at 7 p.m. at the district office to vote on a bond resolution to repay a 1990 loan and to decide whether to keep the director of student services position. Superintendent Don Duncan proposes duties be spread among staff after Nancy Hale’s June resignation. In Prague, Vaclav Havel resigns as president after Slovak regional sovereignty, signaling possible peaceful disintegration of Czechoslovakia.
The fair features multiple open class agriculture entries with abundant fruits vegetables and crops including standard tomatoes onions peppers cucumbers sweet corn potatoes squash cabbage wheat soybeans and more. Secretary of State James A. Baker III meets Palestinian leaders in Jerusalem as they press for more curbs on Jewish settlements. The delegation demands a halt to U.S. loan guarantees to Israel totaling $10 billion unless settlement activity is halted. Baker arrived on Sunday.

Heavy artillery fire shattered an hours-old truce in Sarajevo on Sunday night and forced suspension of the international aid airlift. Gorazde reported fierce fighting as Serb forces clashed with Muslim defenders. At least five people died in Sarajevo, with Tanjug reporting 23 Serbs killed and 31 wounded in the area.
