NATO arms pact takes effect in Europe with inspections

The historic arms reduction treaty entered into force in Europe as Canada sends experts to Russia for the first inspections under the pact. Twenty seven nations have ratified, with Belarus and Armenia pending. Over the next 40 months, inventories and reductions will span tanks artillery armored vehicles and combat aircraft with extensive monitoring to verify compliance.

Supreme Court upholds FDA authority in abortion drug case

The Supreme Court, 7-2, refused Leona Benton’s bid to recover RU486 pills seized by U.S. Customs at Kennedy Airport. Benton, eight weeks pregnant, planned a surgical abortion, while critics praised the decision as backing federal drug policy. Gallup Youth Survey Finds Teens Favor Democrats on Economy

The Gallup Youth Survey shows 53 percent of teens believe Democrats would better handle poverty and homelessness, unemployment, and economic conditions. Non whites and older teens show strongest Democratic confidence, with 86 percent backing Democrats on unemployment. The study surveyed 501 teens aged 13 to 17 from April 17 to May 5, 1992.

DEA raid nets two arrests in Ottawa district court

DEA search at 1145 N Cherry in Ottawa led to the Friday arrest of Gary R. Crane, 41, and Pamela K. Linneman, 30. Both charged with possession of marijuana. Crane also charged with resisting arrest. They posted $500 bonds and await District Court appearances. Officials seized bags, stems, seeds and other items suspected as marijuana in multiple rooms.

U S District Judge Dale Saffels denied a new trial for James Hershberger a Wichita oilman now serving nearly ten years for investment fraud The judge noted Hershberger personally chose not to testify and that his attorney advised against testifying after a practice session with a former judge as prosecutor Hershberger 60 was convicted on 25 counts in the Petroleum Energy Inc scheme

Indians protest tax grab on Seneca reservations

Seneca Indians block a major highway on the Allegany and Cattaraugus reservations in New York as they denounce state demands to collect sales taxes on outsiders.
